Waist beads are a traditional African adornment worn on your body. These adornments date back as early as the 15th Century in Egypt. These symbols are more than jewelry. They were called Girdles in Egypt and were worn to symbolize status. These waist beads were tied around all women and standard to all prepubescent females with positive intention. These adornments were made popular in Yoruba. The Yoruban tribes in Africa would have a spiritual creator that assisted in setting intentions. Waist Beads in many ways provide strength, confidence, and power to young girls transitioning into womanhood. These adornments have many meanings across Africa. In many parts of Africa these beads are used to track growth of a child, used as dowry for marriage, signals purity, lets someone know you are not married. When married these beads are to not be shown or you are considered to be unfaithful and promiscuous. There is a rich background in this, there is more to this than fashion.
